Could easily be pyrite - which looks a lot like gold, which is why it is called 'fool's gold'. The good news is that pyrite is often found where gold is found.
I'm not a geo, but I'm pretty sure geos in the field have some pretty sophisticated devices now that can help them identify anything worthwhile. So the field folks probably have a better idea of what's going on than has been reported so far. We'll just have to wait for the assays.
