In any other country, citizens show both an understanding of, as well as an appreciation for their regulators, as usually these are there to protect the rights and interests of the citizens.

It is only the most dim witted who believe that a national regulator might work at the behest of the UN.

    Rather,

the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is responsible for the day-to-day management of wholesale and retail energy market operations, including the:
    • retail markets that facilitate retail competition, allowing customers to purchase energy from a supplier of their choice

    Its responsibilities include:
    • market operation and administration of the procedures for the energy markets operation of the electricity power system, which is largely integrated with its role as market operator of the NEM coordination of the strategic development of the national electricity grid.
    • resource management maintaining and improving power system security registering persons as market participants (and providing exemptions)

So AEMO's Australian government mandated role includes (amongst many other responsibilities) allowing customers to purchse energy from a suppler of their choice and the coordination of the strategic development of the national electricity grid.

With various Australian states declaring their intention is to have zero emissions by 2050... oops, or should I better note the following (source: https://climateactiontracker.org/countries/australia/):

All states (and in addition, the Northern Territory and ACT) now have either aspirational or legislated zero-emissions targets, and some have strong renewable energy targets as well as green/renewable energy hydrogen strategies in place. Recent studies highlight the large employment benefits, economic recovery opportunities, through creation of new jobs while transitioning to renewable energy.

So - irrespective of what the UN is doing - given that all states are moving towards zero emission/100% renewable energy, it seems that a national energy market operator ought to prepare for this...

Seems to not only make sense to me, but that is actually their job!

I thought I finish off by highlighting another misconception of yours.

To accuse a de facto market operation regulator/bureaucrat of not having "skin in the game" when that is exactly what you want - i.e. for them to be independent of any commercial interest, so they can make decisions that are best for the nation rather than their own pockets - shows just how little you have thought about what you have written above.
