For those playing along, DT had an interview yesterday on A U s b I z and the question was asked, "Does this require a lot of investment to make it work as you require it to?" (the implication being this is a loss making business, how are you going to do it differently)
DT answer: "Not really. A lot of the homework has already been done. The business itself has been bootstrapped the last 15 years. It is limited to how much it could grow and it has ended up carrying a lot of debt. So we're injected sufficient capital to to re-capitalise it but the underlying business is profitable and once you overlay our existing logistics business on top of this it starts to make it very profitable. And so the good news is this brings fwd the profitability of our own logistics business by the best part of 18 months. It takes the pressure off that part of the business and allows us to concentrate our capital investment in areas such as the Marketplace and the direct part of the platform."
Here is a smart logistics business that is working, taking another that has massive connections/infrastructure/etc however it is not working. DW8 will take the infrastructure and make it work in their system. The focus is then undoubtedly on the tech area (market and Direct). Moreover Dt and DW8 have enough capital to concentrate further on market - big margins.
