There have plenty throughout history. Some are socially awkward geniuses. Other's aren't particularly smart but are incredibly driven. Some are a combination of both.

This is the great thing about the internet. It is connecting people with similar interests/goals/ideas and that is speeding up the advancement of the world.

Nikola Tesla comes to mind for me but of course he was famous even though he was sidelined in then end.

There must have been thousands that we've never heard of. The internet is now giving those types of people a path to get their ideas out.

That's why I am very positive about the future.
