Someone...such as a pump and dump specialist...sets up several "nics" on various forums, each of which selectively feeds the market various information (usually announcement or pricing predictions), most of which end up comming true.

In the process, they build credability and something of a following for each of these "nics" along the way.

They continue to feed the market "good" information, in order to build a track record of "accurate" predictions, until one day, when faced with a problem stock, they can call on the perceived respectability of these "nics" to help them out.

Typically, when faced with a bad situation, they will try to entice people by refering to their "track record", giving little reason for their reasons to buy or sell, other than to; "wait and see" or; "trust me"...or even; "have I been wrong before?".

Once everything has gone all pear shaped and the company suspended, the previously respectable "nic" simply disappears and the perpetrator can re-appear through on of their other "untarnished" nics...and start the whole process over again.

I'm not pointing the finger at anybody, but given IHG's current predicament, I thought it might be a relevant point.
