It is a fact that people in poor countries the cost of energy represents a disproportionate share of people's incomes.
If the oil price spikes and causes the petrol price to rise by 50%, we affluent westerners barely flinch.
But for hundreds of millions of people living in sub-Saharan Africa, who need to buy paraffin to cook their food and heat their homes, it makes a massive difference to their lives.
It takes a pretty callous sort of personality to willfully overlook that reality, just for the sake of ideological fervour.
