But shorting actually makes rallies stronger! When a SP stops a decline and starts to rally, shorts scramble to cover their borrowings, thus demand is increased and the SP rises further. Everyone wins! (How long have I drawn that bow?)

Reality is that the market is full of short termers, long termers, retails, instos, longs, shorts, inside traders, Mums'n'Dads, winners, losers, conmen, thieves, sharks, crooks, sophisticated investors and more. Us little guys just have to chip away against the odds and hope we don't get done over too badly.

The fact we know shorters (and everyone else) are out there means we can try to adapt to their patterns.
