News, it could be missing the latest graphics card driver. If trying to change the screen resolution didn't work what you could do is do a Windows Update and let it search for any drivers that might be missing. Just type 'windows update' in the 'start search' box that appears at the bottom of the Start menu (from the task bar).
If that doesn't do anything, then go into control panel then 'system and maintenance' then 'device manager' then 'display adapters' and see what type of graphics you have (it will be either a graphics card like nvidia or ATI Radeon or else on board graphics like Intel). Double click on the display adapter shown and then click on the 'driver' tab and click 'update driver' and 'search automatically for updated driver'. If there's a newer driver and you're connected to the internet it should find it and download it.
That might fix the problem - hopefully. Good luck.
