G'day Nursery...... I agree with much of your post. there is good sense in being immunised, and I'm up for my second jab next week.
However, opening up the economy holds a false promise. Sure businesses are opening in nations where impatience rules over medical science and where the national leaders are short-sighted. No nation can afford to neglect the unvaccinated as any deaths or disabling illness is unacceptable to good governance.
The UK is an excellent proving ground for trialling opening up while still only half vaccinated. My guess as to the outcome is that Johnson will lose much voter support as infection rates soar and unvaccinated ppl die. The US is similar but with large pockets (states) of unvaccinated ppl, so the US is a different experiment of different methods in each state. To deal with covid there needs to be a national strategy.
We don't have a national strategy, despite the position of the federal gov requiring a national strategy. We are less than 20% fully vaccinated. To open up the economy now would be less safe that in UK or US as more ppl would be infected and many would die from the disease.
You wrote recently against a point I made about over-population stressing that you don't want to be denied medical assistance in the event of life-threatening conditions. This is sensible and appropriate. None want to become unwell or die from disease. Opening up the economy would create many opportunities for ppl to become sick.
You are an intelligent person. Many who refuse vaccination are ill-informed. Not so much idiocy but believing idiot propaganda from destructive ppl. Every intelligently run nation takes care of ppl who are less able to distinguish facts from fictions. This is why we wear seat-belts, why we have infancy vaccinations, virtually compulsory.
More importantly we should be vaccinating all front-line workers, especially those who work with the vulnerable, in order to prevent the spread of illness as a compulsory measure of public health.
Once we achieve over 80% fully vaccinated, it is then time to open the economy fully, with gradual steps removing restrictions in the interim, determined by the number of infections in the community.
