"The world is so hot that arctic sea ice extent is at its highest since 2015."

Exactly what was predicted and exactly what you would expect with global warming. The arctic is an ocean surrounded by continents, the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by oceans. Exact opposites, so you shouldn't be surprised that they respond in opposite ways to global warming. The Arctic is all about floating sea ice with Greenland's melting glaciers playing a small role. The Antarctic is all about land based fresh water ice.

There are two factors at play which cause sea ice area around the Antarctic to expand. First and most important are the increasing strength of the katabatic winds then blow down the slope and out from the centre of the continent. They push the ice further off shore allowing more ice to form close to shore. A secondary effect is that the increased melt from Antarctic glaciers freshens the top layer of water in the surrounding ocean. And of course we all know that fresh water freezes at a higher temp than salt water. So if the ocean water gets fresher quicker than the ocean temperature rises then more ice will form.

TLDR: If you're looking for the effects of global warming in the polar regions then in Antarctica you look at the land based ice sheets and glaciers, but in the Arctic you look at floating sea ice.

Area of floating sea ice in Antarctica tells you very little.
