The recent announcement released 27 July offers a good indication of where this is at currently.
Firstly, the graphite to be recycled will be sourced from 2 broad feedstock types - production scrap and black mass. The efficacy of the EGR flowsheet will need to be proven for both streams and in coming years, multiple times with different manufacturers. For both feedstock types the graphite input is/was effectively "active anode material". Largely a case of impurity removal and retention of important flake physical characteristics.
At least one LIB manufacturer is now conducting cell testwork with anode material sourced from EGR-recycled production scrap. All data released up until now suggests positive battery performance tests are a mere formality.
