Initially, the design was for up to 1024 Akida 1000 chips to be linked together -- meaning they would operate in parallel / unison to increase the total processing power for whatever application that required that much computing power. However, presumably due to the fact that there will not be any foreseeable application that would require that many, this was whittled down to 64 processors for cost purposes (probably as the each chip would have had to include the communication channels / threads and associated memory and other elements to support the 1024-chip mesh with the associated real estate in wafer design (bigger chip) as well as licencing fees for the 3rd party technologies) .

From @SERA2g's post, Peter van der Made stated an accuracy of 95% for a breath test was achieved using only 500 neurons of the neural fabric (out of 1.2 million -- or just 0.0417% of Akida 1000's neurons). I think there was another application discussed (on HC forums?) that also only used a small fraction of the neural fabric (I can't remember the details sorry). In most consumer device applications, I do not think there would be a need to for more than 1 Akida.
