usually, dili, I share jettie's thoughts on eliminating the states.
the middle tier of government breaks down the possibilities of efficient fiscal and legislative management. States have rights to manage certain aspects of society only because prior to federation the states competed for trade, workers, resources and numerous other discrepancies that firmly divided the country. Federation was about States sovereign rights as much as it was about unifying the nation.
Removing the states from the constitution would allow uniform codes across all Aus jurisdictions, reduce the cost of governance by around 30%, allow better communication across the nation for agencies such as child welfare and banking, law enforcement and ABS data collection, such is the quagmire of different legislatures and jurisdiction.
but with the advent of covid and the farce that Morrison has made of quarantine and the botched vaccine delivery (normally done by States via the commonwealth procurement system and delivered to every centre on time and in quantities ordered)..... this has left me quite delighted that the States have been in charge of actually dealing with the infection, while Morrison plays banker.
I don't think jetrodder would agree with the last paragraph though.
