A few years ago the Howard govt had plans to put a base near the North West Shelf area in WA where all that gas/oil is located. I recall reading that the Chinese govt protested this idea and Howard did not proceed with that base.
From that incident I assumed the Chinese have some longer term plans for that area. I wonder what that might be?
