friday trading, page-62

I woke up this morning, after one of the longest sleeps I have had in weeks.

I sat blinking in the soft day, soft as in the Irish way where the rain drifts down, the skies are gray, there is no harsh sunlight or the needless screeches of small children.

In the distance I could see a group of bulls cavorting merrily in their dwindling patch of sunshine, a rainbow sparkling in the small patch of sunlight, no doubt huge in their eyes but from the mouth of my cave, this rainbow was just a little speck of irritating colour to my tiny bloodshot eyes, still rheumy from sleep.

I looked down at my hands and noticed they had become calloused and black, the pads thick and ready for the squashing, and my nails, now strong and heavy, engendered within a need to stretch and claw at the money tree that grows outside my door. Sharpened now to rend and smite and take back what is mine.

Tomorrow I shall begin to lumber toward that dwindling patch of sunlight... I have a growing need to eat.
