IMO, its not possible to have democracy where the premium institution is religion (neither Islam or Christianity is democratic) and neither are the prime institutions of Capitalism , the major capitalist corporations.
The closest we get to the latter is the co-op where the workers own the business in equal shares and nominate/employ management.
Similarily, the so called unit of society, the family , is not democratic either.
So, IMO, we delude ourselves when we think that we have democracy by having an election every 3 years where most the candidates are chosen by the local branch of a few hundred people and stacked with vested interests such as trade unions & business interests.
When have you last heard your Member of Parliament say: "I'll only vote for legislation which is for the General Good and i will vote against Legislation which is not and rarely are there legislative issues such as same sex marriage where the Parties allow a "Conscience Vote" . Do we take it that in all other votes, your elected representative is not allowed to vote as per his/her conscience?
