Is voting in the countries you quote compulsory because, in the USA, voting is not compulsory?

How on earth can it be undemocratic not to vote when voting is not compulsory?

Personally I prefer our system where voting is compulsory, but it does have a downside in that it allows lazy people to vote even though they may have no interest in our democratic system whatsoever and just vote out of habit or what ever way their parents voted, without any consideration whatsoever of the consequences thereof. Where voting is not compulsory only those with interest in the long term welfare of their country turn out to vote.

So which system is preferable? I prefer the system where voting is not compulsory, as it means only those with the interest of their country at heart will vote and omits those who have little or no interest in the well being of their country. But the actions of some of our politician can, at times, deter some people from voting. I have never ben that way inclined.
