ABB have no competitive advantage and I believe that their subscription increase almost belong to $150 bonus for friend referral, which they paid recently to existing customers.
Their competitors Tangerine and Flip provided cheaper plans and special discount for first 6 month (just $44.99 for 25mbs compare with ABB $69) .

The switch between providers is almost such easy, as changing of electricity plan (just require a change of few settings on your existing not locked modem - which is majority of people having now) or Tangerine/Flip can provide own preset modem.
So, it's why they are in a hurry for CR. They can't pay so much for new subscription referral and can't keep their prices so high.
