a contrarian view that seems to be gaining traction as the months pass

    IMEC don't trash something for fun - 3DXpoint is a dog ......

this remains true today - no argument in the industry - Micron...see ya Intel ( its a dog )
    - overly dependent on lithography / lithographic tools
    - 100+ different materials required to be sourced through the supply chain and manufacture process cuts fab throughput by 15%
    - requires additional tooling to complete that manufacture process driving up capex / current capital expense X5 increase
    - fab spending increase and space requirement exceeds that for 3D NAND upgrade
NAND survives partly for this reason - Intel sold it off as they thought Xpoint was the real deal ......IMEC are correct ...its a dog
    - limitations of vertical scaling exist
    - slower than DRAM - more expensive than NAND ....again zero cost benefit per bit - in fact revenue negative by definition
    - it only suits a niche market - Intel Optane SSD is fast but....and its the killer but for all the reasons above - its expensivefor zero performance gain

all that time and effort and R&D and capex and marketing and in the end - is it any better ....nope!
IMEC are correct - its rubbish ( my opinion of course) niche market applications only and Micron couldn't take the losses any more with no prospect of returns or increasing market share over time

DRAM market remains wide open - Cartel know it
If I'm buying 4DS cos its a great chip - these days that means I'm on a winner
it means its cheap because its just a chip and presently has a capped production cost ceiling - why pay over the current market value if you don't have a read on what it can potentially return in both metrics and dollar terms....that's the only reason for buying -the acquisition makes you a return immediately and into the future
if more development cost and resources is required to bring it to system......the acquisition price is driven lower - that's the reality in todays market - chip only gives leverage in cost of acquisition to the buyer - buyer needs to redesign library, tools for leading edge use implementation...high cost...more leverage / static acquisition price

Owner - nope! its cost more than that to produce so thanks for your interest but no thanks - there would have been offers i feel - for sure
Universal Memory /DRAM remains the main game for mine

Speed tba and cost reduces over time / profits and market share increase same same....Owner gains leverage over buyer

is this not the desired outcome?

a working array with access device - defined metrics / full electrical characterisation complete - system ready package as well as game changing chip technology = top acquisition price achieved.

    worth some thought - I don't know.
IMEC aren't still there as a hobby - i know that much
