I'm probably a novice too but for me the highs and lows show where the resistance or support is coming in so I focus on those more than the closes.
The closes often show me where things have settled at. So I would use it as a more general gauge of sentiment rather than where is the support or resistance at which is what I want to know for trading purposes.
