I'm not a geologist either but,, going back to the old prospecting days we had a saying, a bit crude but true.
"If you are looking for roos (minerals) and you find some roo shit then you know you are getting close to the source and it also confirms that there is a source.. Then it depends on how fresh that ship was, which would then define how close you are to that source.
