The key reason why DLE is being explored, is because these projects would be uneconomical without it. There is a project in EU proudly marketing lithium content of 192 mg/L. Compare that to SQM with a conventional evaporation method achieving 1,000 mg/L, of which 55% (550mg/L) is recovered on a commercial scale project.
Said 192mg/L is currently at pilot plant scale, so what do the recoveries translate to at commercial scale, if it gets that far.
All but 1 of Ganfeng's recent project purchases have been conventional brine or hard rock resources. While all types of projects will be needed, Ganfeng is taking the safe route, they know their shite.
Anyways, DLE is not a bolt-on solution, the extraction method varies from one resource to another. I'm pretty sure DLE will miss this and the next cycle, but as said, they will be needed at some point, if proven economical.
