An engineering source from within Telstra has told me that Rudd and Conroy's back of the envelope calculations of $43B for the NBN is way wide of the mark and the network, as proposed by them, will cost quite a bit more. Maybe this is part of the reason to split up TLS. That way they can get their grubby little fingers on established infrastructure and get their pie in the sky NBN cost to their magic figure.
