All types of power storage have disadvantages but hydrogen's biggest roadblock is its round trip efficiency. If you have excess power and want to store it short term for future use, lithium batteries can return 95%, flow batteries a bit less, pumped hydro up to 85%, thermal electric and compressed air 65 to 75% but hydrogen can only return 46% of the power put in, a bit more with thermal recovery which isn't practical in a vehicle with current technology.

Now since the operating costs of producing that power from wind or solar are low of course the hydrogen will be relatively inexpensive but the fact remains that if you want to waste the least amount of power you had best steer clear of hydrogen as a power storage mechanism and concentrate on more efficient types.

Once the storage and transport problems for a very small molecule under high pressure are sorted hydrogen has a future for green steel, fertiliser, other industrial processes and forms of transport where its high energy density overrules its inefficiency (planes/ships) but for power storage most of the alternatives are preferable.
