And in the early days developers would licence their game engines and provide source code to other developers, typically 12-24 months after their product released. There was a lot more collaboration and comraderie in that era.
Although you still had incidences where a developer got sued for copyright infringement, see Atari v Magnavox Odyssey about Pong. There was also that time Atari sued Phillips for ripping off Pacman.
A more recent example is the PUBG appling for an injunction against Epic of Fortnite.
Gaming is now one of the largest entertainment categories (by revenue), and companies are much more litigious with the dollars at stake.
