Yesterday Swedish state owned miners, and possible Talga joint venture partner LKAB, had a big dig at the Swedish courts and the mining permit system in a press release. The miners were unhappy at a decision by the court to not allow a faster rate of iron ore extraction they had applied for at their Kiruna iron ore mine. If you are of a pessimistic nature you could look at the problems they have experienced being granted this allowence, for the time being at least, as a bad omen for Talga. However if you dig into very recent developments, you may see LKAB's latest press release as a positive . The Kiruna mine, named after the little town of Kiruna in Lapland Sweden, is a state run iron ore operation that is basically eating the little town that bears it's name. The entire town centre began sinking into the ground years ago due to the mining operation. This has required the entire relocation of the town's historic centre. Yet the state owned miners are still going 'hard in the paint' it seems to get at that iron ore.

LKAB, along with SSAB ( the state owned steel maker ) and Vattenfall, ( the state owned multinational power company ) have formed a JV named HYBRIT. They have developed an amazing new method of steel production that requires no coal in the manufacturing process. It is going to be seen as the 'greenest steel' in the world and it's something the Swedish government really wants to get up and running, and why wouldn't they? The Country needs jobs and industry like any other, and with worlds steel requirements set to increase by a third, from current levels by 2050, and steel production contributing to 9% of the worlds annual carbon emissions this will be a fantastic thing for Sweden and the planet.

Steel samples made from the process have already been sent for appraisal for use to Volvo trucks. So I guess that's why you need to relocate an entire town centre, to get at the high grade ore that's there to make it.

it's all just starting to fall into place for me as i am writing and investigating this, the ramifications that all this may have in relation to Talga and their graphite mining permits. I apologise to posters who may already know all of this and possibly written about it, I have to admit to not watching these threads that much lately.

The following two excerpts are taken from an article featuring HYBRIT steel and the governments minister for business and industry Ibrahim Baylan talking it up in a Forbes article from August:

Then you have Ibrahim saying what he did yesterday :

I'm pretty sure If Sweden will move a town to continue mining iron ore to make 'Green' steel they are going to let Talga dig up graphite out in the wilderness to make batteries for electric cars, especially after the good ministers comments yesterday.
