Indeed it may appear to be so but the trouble with a gross figure is that you can see how many short sales occurred on the day but not how many were covered - so the gross figure is essentially useless.
Would be better if net positions were reported daily but it seems ASIC, and thus the ASX too, are not convinced of their necessity..
