Not sure how it works on the Australian market, but in the U.S. one simple way
to insure that your shares are not shorted by a third party is to place a "good till canceled"
sell order on your shares at an exorbitant price, say $10.

Some of you will take exception with this comment but here goes. Short selling is fundamentally
good for the market. There are companies out there that are being mismanaged as was our next door
neighbor. There were investors out there who saw the mounting risk because of the depth of their
analysis and sold the stock short. They were not out to get the existing shareholders, they simply
had a difference of opinion on how the company was being managed. Heck, there are more than a
few well respected posters here who will on occasion sell a small portion of their investment in this
company.

Unfortunately, there are hedge funds out there with the firepower to manipulate with no justification
other than the opportunity to make money. Something needs to be done about that, but you don't
throw out the baby with the bath water.
