It probably was in the mortgage agreement that the bank could seize the property at any time even if the loan payments were all on time. I have had banks tell me "Oh no, we would never do that!" To which I said, then remove that clause! I eventually found a bank that did remove that clause and took a loan with them for a short while. The others I told to perform an impossible autoerotic act!
