FWIW, Metastock uses two volatility indicators.

First, a general one, uses the hi/lo spread by using
a standard deviation count of the average, over a
default of (10?) periods.

Likewise, the second one (Chaikin) uses the same
as above, but adds percentage ROC of the average
of figure derived from above.

There's many variations on that theme and you
can easily find them on the specialised Metastock
forums ..... in fact you will find 7 other volatility
formulae, at the link below:
