ATP-608P - Rookwood Block






The Rookwood Prospect is located in Authority to Prospect 608P in the western Surat Basin, Queensland. Rookwood-1, drilled in 1987, was sited on the northern flank of the 12 square kilometre structure near the onlap edge of the Boxvale Sandstone. The interpretation of the seismic data suggested that the Boxvale Sandstone thins and may be absent at the crest of the structure, so the well was intentionally drilled off the structural crest but within mapped closure. A Boxvale Sandstone log anomaly interpreted as oil pay was identified after the well reached total depth.

Shows in cuttings consisted of 10 to 30% dim yellow white fluorescence within the Boxvale Sandstone and side wall cores through the Boxvale Sandstone in Rookwood-1 had solid dim to bright yellow fluorescence with instant streaming cut, suggesting the presence of live oil.

The Boxvale Sandstone in Rookwood-1 had two sandstone units, an upper and a lower sandstone separated by a thin siltstone bed. Two conventional DST straddle tests attempted over the upper sandstone of the interval were misruns. A third test, an inflate straddle, over the same interval by a different DST company, flowed water to surface at 180 barrels per day and recovered a full string of fresh water.

Following the water recovery, it was decided that a test of the lower Boxvale Sandstone that had similar oil shows would also flow water and the well was plugged and abandoned.

A review of the well data from Rookwood-1 reveals that there are several inconsistencies with the third DST and it now appears that it may not have been recorded over the Boxvale Sandstone interval with live oil shows, and that this zone remains untested.

A test at Rookwood South-1, with a total depth of 1410 metres and located 400 metres south of Rookwood-1, is interpreted to intersect the Boxvale Sandstone 10 metres further updip.
