I assume the 3 year lead means 3 years ahead of a competitor chip having the same or comparable performance.
The patents protect how you do it (see Ella Fitzgerald), so any competitor would have to come up with a different methodology to achieve the same result. For example, we use conventional digital circuitry. There are competitors at various stages of development using ReRAM/memristors.
Memristors are nice in theory, but have practical problems.
