I'm not saying aluminium smelters can't be powered by alternatives to coal. Just the vast majority are powered by coal directly or indirectly.
I did the math for you on Iceland NZ and Bells Bay and they only make up .0215% of world production combined. China has cut some production but they still need the money from GDP , they are also managing their coal dependency over winter. Most of which is a stubborn political stance.
You can choose use all the smoke and mirrors you like. If AGL shut or cut back it's Tomago 250mw gas fired power station the Tomago aluminium plant would close just like Alcoa had to in Victoria. Why do you think Tomago aluminium has a direct supply agreement with AGL Tomago and Macquarie.
