New Report Indicates Global Biofuel Consumption Will Double By 2015
Posted on: October 7th, 2009 by Lynnette Adamson
A new report by Hart’s Global Biofuels Centre (GBC) has indicated that global biofuels are likely to more than double by the 2015. Despite many issues involving land use and shortages in feedstock, the analysis reveals that the use of biofuels worldwide will increase by half from 2009 to 2015.

According to the report, the United States will spearhead the expansion accounting for an estimated growth of 35 percent in biofuel consumption. Not far behind is Brazil, which the report indicates, will increase biofuel use by 30 percent, and additionally, more than double their amount of biofuel exports. Indonesia and Malaysia have been highlighted as places that could also double their production of biodiesel by using palm oil. Germany will retain its position as the largest biofuel producer in Europe.

GBC’s report predicts that Indonesia, France, China, India, Thailand, Colombia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Argentina will become major new sources for global biofuel production between now and 2015. However, ethanol, palm oil biofuel, and rapeseed biofuel are expected to remain the dominant biofuels produced within Europe.

Although there is large public policy interest in next-generation biofuels, the report indicates that real commercial growth for these fuels up to 2015 will remain lower than current expectations. The study predicts that international mandates that will require next generation biofuels to be produced may not be met, particularly by the US. The report indicates that the only available commercial biofuel which is economical and low carbon is sugarcane ethanol being produced in Brazil.
