The energy mix is changing, but we are talking over a period of decades. For the next 10 years at least coal is going to be a major part of the mix in the energy supply across Asia and the world, both for power generation and materials (iron, steel, cement) and chemical manufacture. Plus I think China has until 2025 to 'peak' on its coal consumption, quite a few coal power stations are being built right now, useful life around 40 years...
Hydrogen can be made out of coal by a process called gasification, which Japan are intending to use with lignite coal as the source. South Korea has a trial Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power Plant that will separate out the Hydrogen from coal and use it to power gas-based power stations. South Korea imports all its coal.
