Both of the major Australian political parties abandoned ideology long ago when they discovered the old left/right philosophies were largely irrelevant in this modern world.

Today we have two "middle of the road" parties both trying to present the best front to the growing numbers of educated swinging voters. In most respects it is difficult to tell them apart, though there are enough differences to at least make voting for one or the other seem important.

The radical elements in our society, if they vote at all as many are not on the electoral roll, now have a number of small parties to vote for as they will not vote liberal or labor.
