The history is they started off with a gold-rich cobalt deposit in Canada and were talking to battery chemical companies about developing it. One company, Ecopro said what we really need is nickel sulfide. They then acquired the nickel asset in Vietnam from a company that mined out a small MSV and struggled with low nickel prices and high taxes on an unrefined product in Vietnam. Enter Blackstone with its partner Ecopro (with a seat on the BSX board) fully focused on building a nickel mine with a green processing plant to get around the high taxes on exporting concentrate and add value by producing NCM811 for Ecopro. So they have nickel and a customer. One issue is that the nickel mine in Vietnam might not be able to supply four trains for the downstream business producing NCM811 which I believe spurred the investment in a similar large but low grade disseminated nickel resource in Canada as a potential future expansion or offtake their concentrate. Full focus on green nickel.
