Agree. It was BS. He continued in other similar roles no?
They used the very personal reasons excuse as it is unlikely anyone who takes them at face value would challenge that.
However we now know none of them can be taken at face value. Everything from them should be viewed as BS unless there is indisputable evidence to the contrary imo.
