Australia, N.Z. Stocks: Iluka, JB Hi-Fi, Nexus, Rio, Woodside
Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 1.1 percent to 4,883.10 as of 10:36 a.m. in Sydney. New Zealand’s NZX 50 Index advanced 0.3 percent to 3,196.42 in Wellington.
The following are among the most active shares in the market today. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names.
Mining stocks: Copper futures for December delivery rose 1.8 percent to $2.8445 a pound in New York yesterday as purchases by China increased and the dollar’s slump bolstered the appeal of commodities. A measure of metals traded in London gained 0.9 percent.
BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP AU), the world’s largest mining company, added 1.2 percent to A$38.84. Rio Tinto Group (RIO AU), the third biggest, gained 2.6 percent to A$64.92.
Oil companies: Crude oil rose above $75 a barrel in New York yesterday, the highest level in a year, on optimism that the global economic recovery and fuel-demand growth will accelerate.
Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL AU), Australia’s second- largest oil and gas producer, advanced 1.4 percent to A$53.38. Santos Ltd. (STO AU) advanced 0.7 percent to A$15.46.
Financial shares: U.S. financial stocks rallied yesterday, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average above 10,000 for the first time in a year, on better-than-estimated earnings at JPMorgan Chase & Co.
National Australia Bank Ltd. (NAB AU), the nation’s largest by assets, rose 1 percent to A$32.23. Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. (ANZ AU), Australia’s fourth biggest, added 1.3 percent to A$25.12.
JB Hi-Fi Ltd. (JBH AU) surged 5.3 percent to A$20.45. The Australian discount electronics retailer was raised to “neutral” from “underperform” at Credit Suisse Group AG.
OZ Minerals Ltd. (OZL AU) dropped 0.8 percent to A$1.30. The Australian copper and gold producer reported third-quarter copper production of 28,316 metric tons and narrowed its production guidance range for the year to between 85,000 tons and 90,000 tons.
Iluka Resources Ltd. (ILU AU) fell 1.8 percent to A$3.79. The world’s biggest zircon producer was cut to “sell” from “hold” at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc.
Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM AU), Australia’s largest gold producer, slipped 1.6 percent to A$36.49. Gold prices declined in New York yesterday after a rally to a record spurred some investors to sell the precious metal. Sino Gold Mining Ltd. (SGX AU) declined 3.5 percent to A$7.14.
Nexus Energy Ltd. (NXS AU) gained 7.6 percent to 35.5 Australian cents. The Australian oil company said production at the Longtom gas project is expected to begin in the coming week.
