People need to chill. The difference between then and now is we have a vaccine and most people are vaccinated and it works really well. The vaccine was developed before Delta and proved to also be effective against it. And Delta is still by far the dominant strain. We still don't know enough about Omicron to know how much of threat it is. In any case, we are far better prepared for it than for the previous strains of the virus.
Of course markets will be volatile with all the media hype and sensation... but I believe it will be short lived. Weary governments with limping economies are not about to go to deacon 1 overnight. International travel again on the back burner most likely, but oh well, it had hardly got going anyway.
