Well in darwins terms its survival of the fittest. Similarily how humans ended up dominating earth due to our evolution of intelligence.
Viruses also undergo this biological change via mutations. We have had 100's of covid mutations from alpha, to beta, to delta to omnicron. The omnicron version is highly mutated and may supersede delta as it tries to survice.
Concerningly some of these mutations lead to higher transmission, bypassing current vaccines or higher death rates due to their constant evolvin
As the WHO gathers further data we will find out over the next few weeks any early indications. Pfizer and moderna etc will need to reengineer their current vacinnes which will require at a minimum 3 months with limited human testing or clinical data
