I appreciate the effort here, but having dug a lot of drains in my time (in the shovel, pick and hoe era), my experience is that usually it's simple, and then, bang, you hit roots, a big rock, or an area that keeps collapsing on itself, and your progress grinds to a halt, life gets miserable, and you want to give up.
I expect drilling for oil has some of the same variability.
