MT gets asked all the time about promising new technologies, and he usually comes back to the same 2 issues: cost and scalability.

My analogy for this is McDonalds.
Do the make the best burgers? No. Is some other chain gonna suddenly usurp them because they figure out how to make a better burger? Nope.
    Why?

McDonalds has found the sweet spot between cost and performance taste.

It doesn't matter how good your burgers taste if you can't make enough of them to keep up with demand. Or if they end up being too expensive a family isn't gonna grab something easy there on a weeknight for dinner. And to get this efficiency they have developed super refined systems and factories restaurants. They may occasionally introduce a new burger or something but they're not gonna suddenly re-do all their stores so that they can make wraps instead because it's a marginal gain in how easy it is to eat.

McCafe (In Australia at least) is the Silicone Anode. The value added product that supplements their main lines. Yes there's other cafes around that may be better but McDonalds can provide coffee reliably at scale using industrial methods.
