Yak claimed it was legal and said "The campaigns by AFR & Motely Fool and others comes under the title of activist Shorting Campaigns. It allowed by ASX as the following link to ASX website shows. This link will show how they can promote FALSE & MISLEADING information during an Activist Shorting campaign".
My post pointed out it is in fact illegal.
Given 9/10 posts here are bullish, and 96% of all shares changing hands do not involve shorting, I would think 'pump and dump' would be orders of magnitude more concerning to ASIC than 'short and distort'.
