Australia has responsibility to burn coal safely”: Rudd
25 November 2008
AUSTRALIA is set to “clean up” thousands of coal-fired power stations to protect its coal export industry, according to the Australian Prime Minister.
PM Kevin Rudd told APEC leaders at a meeting in Peru that Australia is seeking a more prominent leadership role to combat climate change, as it is the world’s largest coal exporter.
Mr Rudd claims Australia has a responsibility to find ways to burn coal safely, with one-third of greenhouse gas emissions expected to come from coal-fired power stations in the future.
APEC leaders praised Australia’s carbon capture and storage research initiative and plans to build a new $100m institute solely dedicated to CCS at the summit, held in Peru from 20 to 23 November 2008.
The summit’s host, Peru President Alan Garcia, says APEC nations will not let the financial crisis stop them from meeting their responsibilities to future generations. He claims that several governments, including South Korea, Canada and Russia are now considering investments in the technology after Mr Rudd’s address.
Around 80 per cent of Australia's electricity comes from coal-fired power generation, and coal is Australia's largest source of export earnings, estimated at $43 billion in 2008-09

The last paragraph ,what influence will the greens have in jeopardising continual use of coal? IMO minimal.
Rudds position regarding continual use very clear ,so is the importance of burning coal safely.
COLDRY ,if government is spending millions in reseach for methods of carbon capture ,technology that can cut carbon emmissions ,have an export and job creation potential with a 6 BILLION backer, and ensure the continual use of affordable energy supply.

What a political winning strategy to clean the coal before exporting,.
