I'm not Swedish and I've only read a bit, so it's just speculation. But it is my opinion at the moment.
In fact, we have done everything to minimise the impact. We exclude the time of the migration and we compensate financially and we commit ourselves to a sustainable treatment of nature and we renaturate.
In addition, the Sami are not the ruling government. Their interests have to be protected and harmonised because of an EU law. This also applies to our interests, as a law of the actual government, i.e. the representation of all Swedes including the Sami, states that this resource of national interest must be protected. Besides, the reindeer are treated in the same way.
So two or three interests have to be reconciled. And it is not the Sami government that decides or is allowed to block. Complicated. This was a rebuke (?) from Brussels to Sweden and an unfortunate complication in the implementation of the Brussels requirement, similar to Natura2000. But the two things should not be compared, as the latter was misused as a blocking opportunity by the Greens, who are no longer in government.
I respect the identity of these regionally specific Swedes, as should be normal in this day and age. And that is how they are treated, equally and not overlooked or overheard. And I think their interests will be preserved and that's what the courts will decide on in terms of the overall government of all Swedes and not specifically for the Sami. But I'm not a lawyer either.
I think equality is the key here, not overreaching (?). Being Sami should not be a privilege compared to the rest of the population. Yet, I have not read of a single thing where they were for and not against. In fact, they are against wind turbines as a matter of course. So it is also natural that they are against the project, therefore there is a compelling balance of interests and no show stopper. Sami are not worth more than the other Swedes, Finns or Norwegians, but have equal rights and are not ignored. So I think this rule will be respected.
I cannot understand the link from LKAB's decision to the Sami but presumably the management can't do that either, unlike their former advisor.
LKAB has no money to finance everything at the same time. They have to finance HYBRIT, ReeMap, the relocation whole city including all periphery, for the state the railway expansion, electrification of the machinery, digitisation... At some point the money and the power is exhausted. Maybe they thought that they would take over the mining and didn't expect that they would have to give hundreds of millions. But who knows.
To me, their words ring truer than I first thought. My first reaction was nebula. I no longer see it that way. I believe it is the truth and I don't believe in conspiracies.
History: Once there were three Sami villages against Talga and manipulated the management of LKAB to decide against mining of graphite. I wouldn't like the management either and wouldn't want to consult them anymore and go. A lot of imagination. It reminds me of a small village in Brittany but that is 2000 years back and just a story.
I see only one big challenge for us and that is Natura2000 and bureaucracy. But the dynamics of the game are such that I have to wait to see what will come. It is developing more and more in our direction. If I could bet, I would bet on MT blinking at me now.
