a jaw crusher usually crushes down to about 25mm to 10mm maybe (and comes out looking like what is normally called screenings) whereas a stamp mill could crush down to 1 mm or less as they did in the old days

I did some sampling of the old A1 tailings dam and it was very fine sand, guessing from memory it was about 50 microns and guessing again that those tailings probably went thru a stamp mill (usually called a "battery" or a "stamp")

I should check my numbers but think they are about right
