ct,adw, and others, i'll apologise for stroking the parrot. I thought a bit of affection might at least calm him down - they are more of a temperamental bird than I thought.

the beauty of this forum is there is a healthy mix of fundamental analysis, technical analysis and pure speculation. Further to what you are saying above ...

IMO w.r.t to gold stocks (or any stocks), while they might all be created equal, over time the shares on issue IMO distorts a lot of the effects of the market. A stocks position within indistry indexes (some are in XAO, XGD, XJO etc) enhance likely institutional trading volumes of those stocks.

I'm expanding a theory that I'm looking into (for my watchlist) - higher numbers on issue cause lags on upswings, and shows downswings equally. Lower issue numbers on issue enhance returns on good news. But you cannot treat them the same (as for ANY sector) - trying to estimate the effects of who and how many are trading any stock also helps (e.g. the top 20% shareholders and what % of issues held) - is it stable? or subject to speculation

In short, IMO while I'm sure everyone wiould love to hear one, there is never going to be a magic bullet answer. Through a combination of sound FA and TA, you can get more comfort in going (or staying) long on any particular stock through turbulence like the present.

For me, TA filters what to look for and possible returns, FA tells you what price to buy at, hang on to or sell if things go pearshaped (I don't day trade obviously). You can learn a LOT from reconciling which sttocks are holding prices/rising or falling right now.

... and I promise to stop feeding the parrot.
