I'm familiar with the story, which unfortunately has nothing much to do with conscience. Adam and Eve are described as naive, they did not understand the concepts of good and evil.
So why did Adam and Eve hide if it has nothing much to do with conscience? If people do things and try to hide it, they are naive?
They did not know what evil is until they had eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, only then did they understand their error (a naive decision), for which they were cursed by God.
Is it said what Adam and Eve did was evil? What was this curse bestowed on Adam and Eve?
