I am not sure that Bluegen works as a back up generator. I think it takes quite some time to power up to be operational. I might be wrong on that though.

There is no doubt that lots of bluegens installed in new housing estates could work well together and reduce the distribution cost side of electricity delivery.

I remember hearing many years back that we as a community pay billions to power companies so that they can build the infrastructure needed to supply us with electricity on a few peak days in summer. One way people advocate for cutting electricity cost is to work on the demand side. That is reduce demand in peak periods so that the system can cope. There are lots of stories of major manufacturing sites having arrangements with their electricity supplier that aim to reduce their demand at peak times. One classic is to fire up and test the back up power generators when every one turns on the aircon. These manufacturers get paid handsomely to go to backup power and reduce demand from the grid.

Lots of bluegens could do the same thing. It might be cheaper for developers to work with CFU and build whole suburbs that are largely self sufficient when it comes to power.
